Otakon 2013: Chiaki Ishikawa Opening Set

Prior to the Yoko Kanno Piano Me concert, singer/songwriter Chiaki Ishikawa played a short set to open the Sunday concert. Having been unfamiliar to her work prior to the event, I was unsure of what to expect. Coming onstage with a single collaborator in keyboard, Ishikawa proceeded to deliver a vocally powerful and somehow intimate performance. The audience was more than a little frosty initially, that’s what openers have to contend with, but by her final song, applause boomed after every song. Showcasing her work in anime, she certainly made more than a few new fans and I hope she can give her North American fans another visit in the near future.
