Otakon 2015: BACK-ON at the Thursday Matsuri!

Review and Below Gallery By Christopher Shelley

I was first introduced to Back-On when watching Air Gear years ago, and was pleasantly surprised to see them performing at the Otakon Matsuri this year. To be honest, I hadn’t been keeping up with them over the years, only peripherally knowing their contribution to One-Piece and Gundam Build Fighters, but was very excited to hear STRIKE BACK, probably one of my favorite openings from Fairy Tail.

The first remark I have, is that their stage presence was fantastic. After getting the audience pumped with their entrance, they immediately launched into their set. Outdoor venues normally suffer from poor sound quality, but the guys behind the system did a very good job at delivering a satisfying experience. There were quite a few times where I could imagine the looks on peoples’ faces blocks away, listening to a Japanese rock singer. After the crowd chanted for “One More Song”, they came back and played 2 additional, and at the end asked for the audience to crowd around the stage for a photo. I believe I may have been standing next to a Vegeta.

Overall, the experience was awesome, the only disappointment was that I wasn’t aware of their half-time performance during the Masquerade. Had I known, I would have made sure I was present. Here’s to hoping they decide to come back in the future, they certainly delivered a stellar performance.
