The holiday season is upon us and gift giving is in the around the corner. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or nothing at all, here are a few ideas to give to your special Asian Cinema lover; or add to your list itself!
Bruce Lee Newsweek Special
This 75th Anniversary Issue highlights what would have been The Little Dragon’s 75th birthday this year. Filled with high quality photos and interviews from those that knew him best, it’s a great collectible to have in this year of Bruce.
Bruce Lee DJ Shirt Official Bruce Lee Shop
Featured in this year’s superhero smash, this image was emblazoned on Robert Downey Jr.’s shirt in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Available in a number of colors, click the link above to buy an official shirt instead of all those knock-offs in the wake of the film’s success.
The Raid Original Indonesian Score LP MONDO
When The Raid was brought over to US shores, the original score was changed to one orchestrated by Mike Shinoda and Joe Trapanese. This original score by musicians Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemar provides an altogether different experience and highlights just how important a film’s music can be tonally. On limited edition 180 gram and in a Grey colored vinyl, this is an epic OST.
Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru Criterion
What else can be said about Akira Kurosawa’s mazing human drama? It’s finally out on Criterion Blu-ray and looking better than ever. One of the must haves in any cinephile’s collection, this is a no-brainer.
Masaki Kobayashi’s Kwaidan Criterion
Also released this year, Kobayashi’s epic horror anthology is just a emotive and chilling as ever. Now on Blu-ray, this horror classic looks and sounds better than ever to provide one of the best Japanese horror experiences ever.
Funko POP! Vinyl Godzilla Funko
This larger sized POP! was released earlier this year. Inexpensive and cute, it’s possibly the coolest cinema POP from the line full of great properties and licenses. Also, everyone needs at least one Godzilla figure in their life right?
Funko POP! Vinyl Gigantor Funko
This regular size POP is one of my favorites because Gigantor (aka Tetsujin 28) was one of my favorite things ever growing up. There really isn’t a lot of collectibles available for it these days outside of Japan so snap it up while you can, and go back to days of dreaming about controlling your very own giant robot with your watch.
Battle Without Honor or Humanity Blu-ray Set MVD Shop
This is the big one, probably the greatest set to be released this year. Thanks to the fine folks of Arrow Video, who have no shortage of love for the material, the long OOP Yakuza Papers series has made it back to US shores in a deluxe limited edition Blu-ray set. One of the crowning achievements of Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku’s career, thie series is brutal, enthralling, and everything about why I became interested in Asian cinema in the first place. The fact that this release has gotten such care and attention is just icing on the cake. If you give one present this year, even if it is to yourself, make it this.
