It has been on everyone’s mind since The Expendables dropped in 2010, what about a female version? Well Variety reports that the project is in the works. “Just as “The Expendables 2” explodes into theaters, Adi Shankar’s banner 1984 Private Defense Contractors has tapped Dutch Southern to write an all-female riff on the star-studded action franchise. Shankar (“The Grey”) will produce for 1984 Private Defense Contractors, which plans to fully finance the “Expendables”-inspired project. Company is already in talks with several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre.”
The million dollar question, which actresses have been approached so far? Also, what took so long? Fans of Asian Cinema have seen these types of films for years where the females hold there own against their male counter-parts. Cynthia Khan, Moon Lee, Michiko Nishiwaki, Yukari Ôshima (Pictured in the The Avenging Quartet (1992) poster) were no strangers to these types of action films during the Girls With Guns heyday. I am pretty sure this is going to be an international mesh-up of actresses that are not afraid to get bloodied and take some bruises.
A few that come to mind are Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Rothrock, JeeJa Yanin, Angelina Jolie, Summer Glau, Linda Hamilton, Milla Jovovich, Maggie Q, Ha Ji-won, Shin Eun-Kyung, Pam Grier, Rina Takeda, Michelle Rodriguez, Zhang Ziyi, Chiaki Kuriyama, Sigourney Weaver…. just to name a few. There are many more, but it is going to come down to the best of the best, plus fans of this upcoming project have their own fantasy wish list. It’s going to be interesting to see who makes the final cut, plus to see where they go with the story. Once these divas sign on the dotted line, next up we get to see who will take on the task of directing this.
Now, with an all female Expendables in the works…. Where is our all Asian Expendables? One can only hope.
