Kazuyoshi Kumakiri’s Upcoming My Man (Watashi no Otoko) Aims For Next Years Berlin International Film Festival


Director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri’s (Blazing Famiglia, Bungo: Stories of Desire, Summer’s End) upcoming adaptation of Kazuki Sakuraba’s Novel Watashi no Otoko – My Man ( Winner of the 138th The Naoki Prize in 2007) isn’t due to hit wide release in Japan until June 2014, but it looks like distributor Nikkatsu are aiming for an early February showcase at the Berlin International Film Festival next year.

Winner of the Busan Award at the 2011 Asian Project Market, $20,000 was awarded for funding the project. No word on which selection Watashi no Otoko – My Man will be showcased in, but we will keep our eyes open once the news is announced.  Watashi no Otoko – My Man stars Tadanobu Asano, Fumi Nikaido, Kengo Kora, Tatsuya Fuji, Morooka Moro, Aoba Kawai, Taiga, Itsuki Sagara.

Synopsis: The disastrous earthquake and Tsunami occurred in Okushiri Island, Hokkaido in 1993, took the  whole family away from 9-year old Hana in front of her eyes. At that moment, she became an  orphan. But the next day, she met a man, whose name is Jungo. He was 25 years old, 16 years  older than Hana. Jungo did everything to adopt Hana and they became family.` Since then, they  lived together for 15 years, just two of them.

Father and daughter were very close Jungo loved  Hana with all his heart and soul. Hana loved him back just as much. The story of them starts from  the rainy Tokyo evening in the year of 2008, just a day before the wedding of Hana. Then, the story goes backwards in time to their past, to Monbetsu 1993, just like flipping pages of an old photo album.
