Synopsis: Snowy Ashibetsu City, Hokkaido, present day. The proprietor of the unique antique dealer “Hoshifuru Bunkado,” Mitsuo Suzuki (played by Toru Shinagawa), a former hospital director, passed away at the age of 92. The members of the Suzuki family, who were living apart, returned to their hometown of Ashibetsu to attend the funeral. A mysterious woman named Nobuko Shimizu (played bt Takako Tokiwa) appears before them asking if she made it in time. Mitsuo’s past history gradually comes to light by the woman’s sudden coming and going. What happened to Mitsuo, who experienced the invasion by the Soviet Army in Sakhalin where the battle raged on even after Japan had lost World War II on August 15, 1945? A young girl named Ayano (played by Yumi Adachi) bought a book of poetry owned by Nobuko. What was the relationship between Nobuko and Ayano? Just who was Nobuko Shimizu? During the 49 days after the death, before a Buddhist memorial service for repose of the soul of the deceased, both the living and the dead become rovers, learning that they are connected to a family and a home. This is the companion piece of “Kono Sora no Hana – Nagaoka Hanabi Monogatari- (Casting Blossoms to the Sky)” and the newest film Nobuhiko Obayashi powerfully and spiritedly directed.
